Gary......I'm just watching some bee keeping videos on the tube and a question arises.  Keepers use smoke to "calm" the bees when working around them.  What do you use to generate the smoke?  It isn't wood smoke is it?

    • Hi Mike, sorry for the delay...  most local beekeepers I know use dried pine needles off of local pine trees...  works well...  also, pine cones and or sticks and twigs...  one can also buy compressed fuel pellets for the smoker at a bee supply store online...  Best Wishes / writing from Leon, Nicaragua...   Gary

I like the idea of a visual diary...Perhaps I shall give it a try, although I am not sure that I have the discipline for choosing ONE for each day. My work has proven that I have litle discipline at all.....maybe that will be the theme.

Kept seeing you come up on my searches through Fotki. So I stopped by.
Great site you have. I started out enjoying how you used the site as a daily diary. (I may have to use that!)
Then I noticed that you also use the Journals and the Forums that are built in to Fotki. I myself am trying to use those more often as well.
And of course all the great photos you guys are taking! I will be visiting your site often.....
    Have a great day Gary............

I  just checked my benchmark samples. Im now down to 3 missing out of 314 pictures in one album (under 1%), http://search.fotki.com/stein_s/?q=1962

I have also tagged a number of pictures that I have found missing at any one time. In that sample the percentage of missing pictures is somewhat higher..

Even before Sandy, temporarily missing pictures occured. I suppose this is due to the "timeout effect" The pictures must be stored on several servers, First you access the core file which contains the links to the pictures, Then the pictures are accessed and presented. All data exchange runs over the Internet, if it is slow, or there is a particularly heavy processing load on one (or more) server(s) the system might not receive all the requested pictures on time.an just skip it in further processing.

It can be compared to missing a connecting flight when you travel,

If there is a timeout anywhere, the picture appears to be missing. Under normal conditions, renewing the page will solve the problem, since the picture is just late for the next leg.

Hi Gary :) nice to hear from you!

Yes, I am still regularly on Fotki but more for checking if all runs smooth and what's new than to socialize or posting new pics or maintaining my account.

It's not so much that I lost interest but more that I lack time. Since I adopted a second dog I also lack hands to carry my cam safely. Managing two leashes or monitoring two free running dogs doesn't leave me much abilities to shoot photos. Especially because my second dog Ana is a Spanish Greyhound rescue, bred and (ab)used for rabbit and hare hunt and she is stunningly fast. If she runs with >35m/h into a toddler on the beach it could be fatal for the child and if she follows a rabbit who decides to run to the street it could end up in "multiple fatalness" ;) So I rather focus on her than on sunset number 1 gazillion and 3 with my cam.

I do regularly vote in the contests though and I hope, that I might find some time in the Winter, to post just a few of the many thousands of photos that never left my computer.

I wish you a wonderful winter ... be fine

    • Hi Napomo!!! Thanks for the awesome reply and good luck with your dogs!!! You have a great relationship with them.
Yes, I hope also, to have some more time to spare this winter. There are always a lot of projects here with the farm, the honey bees, markets, etc (my new business... www.BusyBeesNJ.com ) and other things. Erin and I got married last year and things are great, it's a new life. Best Wishes to You!!! Gary

PS. My daughter, Alaina just spent the last few years living in Amsterdam
And getting her Masters Degree in film Studies. Now she's in Canterbury, UK
Working on PhD. I always loved my visits to the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
      Bee Well, my friend.

PS. I am on Facebook too, in the event you use it, too?

Hi GaryYes, I received your e-mail with birthday greetings and did reply to you wishing both you and Erin a Happy Birthday.  I am not on fotki very much nowadays although I do add my walking photos as many people in our club like to see them.  I do Blipfoto every day and love it, you should try it!  I did try Facebook but didn't like it at all.Hope you are happy and doing some celebrating of your birthdays.  Have just had a lovely family meal in a local steakhouse, and birthday cake at our house, and have had a wonderful day.SlainteMyra
    • Thanks for getting back with me, Myra... and answering my questions... I did become a member of Bliphoto and see you and Irene there, but honestly, my internet time is very limited these days... I do use facebook,,, for me it fast and easy and most of my family and friends are already connected there. It is also easy to use from my iPhone or iPad which is more convienient for me to use than my computer these days... But we can stay in touch in many ways... Bee Well!!! Love Gary & Erin!!!
