Hey Metisse. I bought a NikonD40. It is the base model of Nikon's SLR cameras. You should be able to find it for about $479 new. It is perfect for starting out and learning. Great lil camera:) I think it is ranked pretty high with consumer reports. But def do your research. Another contender is Canon's base model. Can't speak on it. But people seem to enjoy that one as well.
