Hi, I started a new little hobby business. I like to sew but am not the best seamstress but it involves helping the environment by reusing/recycling clothing and making cute backpacks for our pooches! I've also made a few totes. Please check out my website and send me an e mail on how I could improve, or if you think it's a good idea. I mostly needed to learn how to build a website, and I also love to create things. Thanks, Michelle & "Stitch"

Steve,

I don’t like Fotki’s method of voting. The only meaningful feedback is the comments, and many contestants don’t get any. When you peel away the social comments, there’s very little substantial discussion of what is good or bad about a photo. What I do is vote all photos using the “skip” button, which does not affect scores, and then try to give almost everyone a comment. My comments are often not substantial either, but what I think is important is that everyone’s photo receives some consideration – not just friends, but everyone.

There were four contests when I tried to demonstrate that alternative ways to scoring could work. The first one was the “Human Faces” contest. I scored over 300 photos with links to album #7 in that same folder where you saw the animal babies scores.

I also tried alternative scoring in the graduation contest (album #8), the cooking contest (album #9), and then finally the animal babies contest. Based on the comments I got from those contests, there is a lot of sentiment that Fotkins do not like the Fotki scoring system. So I’ll keep trying different things until Fotki takes notice.

In the animal babies contest, what I did was create a web page where I could enter my subjective scores for each photo in four components – theme, composition, clarity, and intangibles. Then I snapped the image of that page and uploaded it to the #11 album. Once I wrote the program, it didn’t take much longer for me to vote that way than it would to vote using Fotki’s method. It was only longer for me because after I voted using my system, I still had to go back through the contest and post my links to the corresponding photograph – but of course that wouldn’t be necessarily if Fotki used something like my alternative systems instead of their own.

It was interesting in the animal babies contest, that at the end, my scores were statistically like a bell curve, and that is how it should be:

I don’t have as much free time as I used to, so I’ve taken to only commenting on the smaller contests. I completely gave up on the Photo of the Week contests, which generally have better photos, but Fotki insists on continuing there with a voting system that no one I know likes.

Thanks for your interest.
