Hi Al,

I don't know if you enter the fotki contests or not, but the current one you could clean up with one of your great shots, the subject is "Wild & Natural".

Cheers

Peter

Hi Al,
I just got back from my holiday in the UK. We had to come back in a rush as my father in law is in hospital, so I am very busy at the moment. I did not check my friends sites yet but now I have a few spare minutes!
Thanks for your nice comment on my bee...It was a lucky shot I guess but I am very pleased with it!

I really enjoyed the new Montana stuff. I haven't been to Glacier Park in some time but I know it pretty well. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. There's some great shots in this album and, as usual, I got carried away with comments. Your bird shots are outstanding and the dragonfly in flight is wonderful. Great job! Mike

Al.........I heard from my friend Phil at the UW and he says it looks like a Saddleback Caterpillar (Sabine stimulea). It will cause no harm (the damage it causes is of no consequence to the host) unless you touch it. Those spines have quite a potent toxin in them. You can read more about it at these two sites:

http://entweb.clemson.edu/cuentres/cesheets/biting/ce193.htm

http://www.ext.vt.edu/departments/entomology/factsheets/saddle.html

There's a bunch of sites out there about this critter which is described as "common." Don't know why I've never seen one before. Can't be all that common. Anyway, just Google the common or Latin name and lots of information will appear.

Hope this helps you out.

Hi Al...........that caterpillar is a new one for me. Can't say I ever saw one quite like it. If it's alright with you, I can download the photo and send it on to some people I know at the University of Wisconsin. They might be able to help. I won't do it if you say no.

Hi Al,
I was surprised to find macro shots here! I especially liked the blue dragonfly...the colours are stunning!
I took my first dragonfly shot of the season today...not easy as it was a small one and very vivid!
If you wanna have a look, it is orange and rather vibrant for my area: http://public.fotki.com/viviane/canon_powershot_pro1/pro1-_macro_and/fauna/pro_1_-_macro_insec/dragonflyorange.html
I find the pictures in original upload much better...it seems fotki changed settings.
Take care,
Viviane
update: thanks for visiting, this url should work though....

Good day Al...........I was just looking at your backyard macros. Nice work. Pictures are beautiful...........but your spelling needs some work. Beatles were a rock band.........beetles are insects. Just thought you'd want to know. BTW.........I just got myself a D2x a couple of weeks ago and I'm having fun trying new things.
