You bet I did and had I built a due rapport with the community already, I'd have rushed there. You know how delicate an issue it is to photograph them in general, and after that event...
Photo-journalism greatly appeals to me on many accounts and I hope I'll develop this direction as well, with time.

I only played for 5 or 10 minutes, but I struggled following your instructions last night for "quick mask".. not sure what the heck I am doing wrong. It seemed like I was painting on the actual photo with "gray" and not masking. I never got the dancing "ants" to show I was selecting anything. I need to give it a concerted try again tonight.

re-read the text. you're making a classic error that I predicted you would :-)

Nah, I just must have done something wrong last night - may have been on the wrong layer.. who knows - I was tired when I started playing. Tonight it worked like a charm - and thanks especially for changing the default from "mask" to "select".. I didn't read that until later and was getting frustrated with selecting inverse all the time.. now it works JUST like a PS Elements selection brush - thanks!

Hi Rich,

I finished the 'B&W to color' course.

More roads lead to Rome, as the proverb says. This is not the only way, and even not the best way, to colorize a B&W photo. I've chosen this way because it is easy to explain, introduces layers in a simple way (only 2 at a time) to people who might not know how to use layers.

Rich (http://members.fotki.com/RichBruton/about/) suggested several other methods (see my guestbook). He is willing to 'ghost write' this course, explaining other ways to colorize a B&W photo. Of course I accept this suggestion!
Thanks, Regina, for being such a beautiful and patient model. Thanks, all of you, for your attention!

--------------

Hey Rich, this message includes you! How shall we arrange things? Maybe I should move the course into a journal, so you can easily co-write.

Hi Rich,

A long time ago I promised to explain how to colorize a B&W photo. Regina ( http://public.fotki.com/imrs1 ) recently saw that I colored a B&W Lantia photo and asked if I could explain how this was done. So, finally...
Go to http://public.fotki.com/JohnVanHulst/from-a-black-white/ for the first lesson.

Cheers, John

P.S. www.ladyinblack.org (a Fotki friend, I made her -simple- site)

Oh yeah, your comment..
Fair job ... but, at the risk of sounding too critical, I want both of you (RL & Arti) to be as good as you can.

The teeth should be close to the same white-ness as the eyes. The eyes are un-naturally sharp and white here ... something an international PS trainer once told me to avoid. It's more believable if the white of the eyes have natural "veins" in them and resemble the sharpness of teeth.

More restoration ideas available if you're interested ... let me know ;-)
***my reply***
Rich - I think Ira has moved WAY past this level of work since she did this for me many months ago. In fact, I know she has - look at my avatar

You're too kind Rich, but I can't say enough how much I appreciate it coming from you. I miss the days when I was churning out 4 or 5 a week lol....because of time I have changed from just going and finding photos that inspire me to having to look for inspirations in the photos I am requested to do.....much harder and I am afraid the results show that. But it is still fun and probably is making me grow as an artist...I pay much more attention to details too now....my early works were quite defective veiwed at original sizes. thanks again Rich, Scott

Hi Rich,
Interesting albums u have! I like the way u work with pictures.I saw a lot of photoshop work, but some of them look "overdone".. I meen something to much on them! =] "Comments, Blogs, Msgs"-very interesting album!!! LinB in it absolutly beautiful!!!

Have a nice day!

Maria. =]

reply: Maria, you're absolutely right :-)

Much of the old stuff you see here is just experiementation and playing around. I have over 100GB of work, and started archiving it to Fotki as a backup -- but I got lazy about 1/3 the way through.

So most of what you see here is not finished pieces.

I've tried to start a practice of putting some of my new stuff up as I continue creating it (like Lady In Blacks piece), and those will usually be more polished.

That old stuff was from my early years when I was learning ... like a kid that discovers new crayola colors and uses them everywhere.

I hope you'll come back and check out my "edge" album from time to time ... that's where I try to trickle in my newest adventures :-)

thanks for your feedback ... it is invaluable to me !!
