Yes these vessels and the technology to build them is very old,in fact there are thought to be links beween the Inca and the Vikings if I remember correctly.There is actually a replica of Thor Heyerdahl's reed boat and the story of his navigation on Sun Island,the presumed birthplace of the Inca in Lake Titicaca.
